With 74 islands to choose from, picking the right Islands to visit on the Whitsundays comes down to the type of holiday that you’re looking for and the type of traveller that you are. However you choose to travel and whatever kind of break you are looking for, the Whitsundays really does have something to offer everyone.
To make things simple, we’ve included a breakdown of our recommended Whitsundays islands according to traveller type and the kind of holiday you’re looking for.
Best Whitsundays Islands for Couples
1. Hayman Island
Where is it? Hayman Island is the northernmost island in the Whitsundays located about 28 km north-east of Airlie Beach. The entire island is occupied by a single luxury resort.
Ideal time to spend: 2-3 nights
How to get there? Fly into Hamilton Island Airport, then transfer via resort-arranged boat (1 hour), helicopter (15 minutes), or private boat charter.
Why Hayman is perfect for couples: Hayman Island is perfect for couples offering Queensland’s most exclusive private island experience. Choosing Hayman island means you won’t be contending with day-trippers or large crowds – just the InterContinental Hayman. Hayman Island is the best island in the Whitsundays for honeymoons, anniversaries, and milestone getaways.
Popular things on Hayman:
- Snorkel at Blue Pearl Bay
- Book a couple’s treatment at the Hayman Spa
- Charter a private yacht to Whitehaven Beach
- Take a scenic helicopter flight over Heart Reef
Best time to visit Hayman: There’s no “bad” time to visit Hayman Island, but if we had to say, May to October might just be the best due to dry weather, clear skies, and perfect weather for snorkelling.
2. Long Island
Where is it? Long Island is the closest Whitsunday island to the mainland, tucked between Airlie Beach and Hamilton Island. Mostly national park, with two small eco-resorts.
Ideal time to spend: 2–4 nights.
How to get there? Long Island is a 30-minute ferry from Shute Harbour (scheduled departures twice daily), or helicopter transfer via Helireef.
Why Long Island is perfect for couples: Palm Bay Resort is adults-only and deliberately off-grid. Long Island offers a more relaxed, low-key alternative to Hayman with a Bali-like vibe.
Popular things to do on Long Island:
- Walk the Round Hill Circuit
- Snorkel the fringing reef off Palm Bay
- Kayak or paddleboard from the resort beach
- Sunset drinks at Palm Bay’s beachfront bar
- Book a day tour out to Whitehaven or Heart Reef
Best time to visit Long Island: June to October. Shoulder months (April, May, November) are quieter and still beautiful if you’re looking to avoid the crowds.
