Can You Swim At Airlie Beach?
Once you’ve finally arrived at Airlie Beach (whether by shuttle bus or ferry from the Hamilton Island airport), the idea of going for a quick dip in the water can be hard to resist. And we wouldn’t blame you – the waters off the Whitsunday coast are both warm and inviting.
You can swim at Airlie Beach, but some areas are better for swimming than others. Most locals and travellers swim at the Airlie Beach Lagoon, which is a saltwater pool in the centre of the town, overlooking the Coral Sea. Apart from the man-made lagoon, several other beaches offer access to the sea, including Airlie Beach itself.
Is It Safe to Swim At Airlie Beach?
The main concern for swimming around Airlie Beach is the presence of stingers in the water. The waters around Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays Islands are home to stinging jellyfish that appear mainly during the warmer October to May stinger season. Some of these stingers include the dangerous box jellyfish and the Irukandji.
If you are planning to swim in the ocean, you’ll need to wear a stinger suit that covers most of your body. Stinger suits can be rented from vendors along the beach, and are usually provided as part of a Whitsundays sailing cruise or snorkelling tour.

Where Can You Swim in Airlie Beach?
The Airlie Beach Lagoon is the best place for a swim any time of the year – the lagoon is completely sectioned off from the ocean, safe from stingers! The Airlie Beach Lagoon is also family-friendly; there are wading pools for toddlers, shallower pool areas for the kids, and dedicated swimming lanes for those looking to get their laps in. The lagoon is filled with fresh chlorinated water and has a maximum depth of 2m.
Airlie Beach Lagoon is also patrolled by lifeguards, and has shower and changing room facilities for convenience. It’s easily the best option for a swim in Airlie Beach – just be sure to come early in the morning if you want to secure a shaded spot on the deck.
Main Airlie Beach
Swimming in the ocean at the main Airlie Beach itself is possible, but most choose to take their dip in the lagoon rather than brave the stingers.
Boathaven Beach
If you are set on dipping your toes into ocean water, Boathaven Beach is the next best option. Only a short 10-minute walk from the town centre, Boathaven Beach offers a stunning view of the Whitsunday horizon, white sands, and a safe swimming area cordoned off by stinger nets.
Cannonvale Beach
Cannovale Beach is yet another great swimming spot and is also protected by stinger nets. The beach is located west of Airlie Beach, about a 4-minute drive or a 15-minute bus ride/walk. Cannonvale Beach is the better option if you want a quieter day at the beach – there are lots of green spaces before the sand for a picnic.

Swimming Spots Past Airlie Beach
As beautiful as it is, Airlie Beach is only the gateway to the Whitsundays. There are plenty of swimming spots out in the open waters of the Whitsundays worth exploring. To get there, you’ll need to book one of the many Whitsunday sailing tours departing from Airlie Beach.
Whitsunday sailing tours can take you to swimming spots near fringing coral reefs teeming with marine life, secluded island bays, and to the iconic Whitehaven Beach. Stinger suits will be provided on these tours to help you stay protected during the warmer months.
