Only 30km from Airlie Beach, Hamilton Island is the most populated island in the Whitsunday region and an iconic destination in its own right.

There’s so much to do on Hamilton Island that it’s impossible to cover it all in a day – from hitting the links at the island’s golf course to lounging by the Catseye Pool Club, you’ll need to either stay on the island or know how to get there easily from Airlie Beach.

Getting to Hamilton Island from Airlie Beach

Ferry Service

The easiest (and cheapest) way to get to Hamilton Island from Airlie Beach is via the local ferry service operated by Cruise Whitsundays.

There is a direct service that runs from Airlie Beach to Hamilton Island and back, as well as a non-direct ferry service that stops at Daydream Island along the way. There are two ferry departure points from Airlie Beach – Shute Harbour and the Port of Airlie.

A direct ferry service from Airlie Beach to Hamilton Island will typically take between 1 hour and 1 and a half hours.

The ferry service runs 7 days a week, with the first ferry scheduled at 7:15 am and the last at 4:05 pm.

The ferries have a high passenger capacity, taking over 200 guests at a time during peak periods.

There is a free seating arrangement on board – there are no allocated seats. Most vessels have an upper and lower deck, with the upper deck being open air and the lower deck being fully air-conditioned.

How To Buy Ferry Tickets

Tickets for the direct ferry service from Airlie Beach to Hamilton Island can be bought directly on the Cruise Whitsundays website. There are also other ticket finding websites – but since Cruise Whitsundays is the only operator in the region, you’re better off booking directly.

Be sure to select the direct service to Hamilton Island Airport. The end destination of the non-direct service is marked as “Hamilton Island Marina”, but this is technically the same location as the airport.

A one-way ferry ticket will cost around $70-80, subject to seasonal changes. If you are already at Airlie Beach, you may be able to purchase tickets at the counter.

Helicopter Island Transfer

If you’re willing to splurge (it’s a holiday after all), another way of getting to Hamilton Island from Airlie Beach is via helicopter.

Helicopter rides are considerably faster and take about 15-20 minutes, departing from the Coral Sea Marina at Airlie Beach and arriving at the Hamilton Island Airport.

Helicopter island transfers are a unique experience that many consider well worth the cost – even if it’s for a one-way trip. You’ll be treated to spectacular aerial views of the Whitsunday Islands along the way.

Helicopters can take up to 3 passengers at a time. Some helicopter transfer providers do not accept single passenger bookings, but if you’re travelling solo, you can call in and ask about single seat availability on already booked transfers.

Prices and timings for a helicopter transfer are not fixed, so it’s best to check with the local providers like Hamilton Island Air and Helireef Whitsundays.
